Assignment 2

I read an article today in the Chicago Tribune (Sunday, March 20, 2011). Well, it wasn't actually an article, it was more like a list of small things that are different in the internet age. The article mentioned missing the feel of holding a book and how you can't bring a kindle into the bathtub. It mentioned the destruction of proper spelling on twitter. Even older mediums like TV is starting to catch up and have their characters use the internet. Old people are using facebook. Loosing your phone is like loosing your arm. People no longer care about missing a call, with the increase in answering machine usage.

It was a cute article, but ultimately pointless. I never owned e-books, so I can't comment on them. However, I have noticed a decline in people's ability to spell simple words. The media's use of the internet is intriguing. Normally they don't catch onto things this quickly, and people were saying that social media was a fad only a few years ago. It's amazing that stodgy old TV executives caught on so quickly. But now that I think about it, it makes sense. The advent of social media was such a huge shift in the way people find information and communicate that it is hard to imagine life without it. Just the other day I was reading a review of Harry Potter (a big theme of Harry Potter is finding information, and they find information in dusty old tomes.) and the reviewer made the excellent point that if they had "Wizard Google" they could have found all the information on Nicholas Flammel in five minutes, instead of five months.

  1. I enjoyed the depth you obtained in writing this article. There are many points that I agree with, especially the part about twitter [etc] allowing us to misspell common words. Also, yes, there has been a steady decline in interpersonal communications due to the internet and smart phone usage both here & abroad.

  2. This article informs you that people are depending on technolgy too much,Such as not needing to know how to spell,
not having to leave your home to socialize. What age to you consider to be old?

  3. I agree with people's inability to spell, and do simple math without employing a calculator. As the information age progresses and technical gadgets become smaller, more powerful, and prevalent I cannot see things getting better.

  4. I just realized that there's some irony here. I misspelled sandwich in my blog's title and URL. To late to change now though.

  5. Lol dat is so truee y cant peeple lern to spel?? That is so crazi...
Ok yes that was my bit of sarcasm. But honestly you do have a point. It seems like people would rather misspell words on purpose to shorten them because they really do need that extra millisecond of time for all of their other activities. I mean, when you add all those milliseconds up you might get like, what, two minutes? Some people just have to sacrifice the correct spelling to get that extra two minutes of life back..

  6. Alot of what people do know revolves around their phone or social networking sites. All the texting and typing shortcuts, lead to poor spelling. One day you will just go to the library website, from your home computer enter a code and just download a book, the person to person contact needed. With all the Wiki's out their, alot of people do not bother going to the libray to do their own research.

  7. I do agree with you that what would people do without the internet and google, i would hate to have to drive to a library or go to the place myself to find information about it. I too have not gotten into ebooks, i prefer normal books that i can hold in my hand and keep on a shelf for later, not having to worry about it getting erased or anything.
